Tool Steel O1 vs A2 vs D2: Which Grade Should You Pick for Your Die?

What Is the Best Steel Grade for Hydraulic and Pneumatic Shafts?
April 24, 2026If you source steel for defense contracts, you’ve seen “DFARS compliant” on the requirements list. Most buyers know they need it. Not everyone knows what it actually covers. Understanding it upfront saves you compliance headaches, documentation delays, and costly sourcing mistakes later in your project.
We’re Precision Ground Metals, Inc., located in Chicago, IL. We supply DFARS-compliant precision ground bar stock to defense, aerospace, and precision machining customers across the Chicago area and beyond. We’ve been doing this for over 30 years. When compliance requirements show up on your spec sheet, we already know how to handle them.
DFARS Compliance and What It Means for Your Steel Order
DFARS stands for Defense Federal Acquisition Regulation Supplement. Its specialty metals clause requires that steel used in covered U.S. defense contracts be melted or produced domestically, or in a qualifying country. That rule applies throughout the supply chain. Tier 2 and Tier 3 suppliers can carry the same obligation as the prime contractor.
Most of our materials are domestically sourced. For defense customers in Chicago and across the surrounding region, that’s not just a quality preference. It’s what makes the material eligible for their contracts. Sourcing from us means your material traces back to domestic production, which is exactly what your contract compliance review will ask for.
DFARS, REACH, and RoHS Are Three Different Requirements
Buyers often group these together, but each one covers something different. DFARS is a U.S. defense regulation focused on the country of origin for specialty metals. REACH is a European Union chemicals regulation that applies when your products enter European markets. RoHS restricts hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment.
We maintain compliance with all three. Knowing which one your contract triggers matters because the documentation each requires is different. Getting that sorted before your order goes out keeps your procurement process moving without last-minute surprises.
The Steel Grades That Appear Most on Defense Specs
Alloy steel 4140 is one of the most requested grades we see from defense and aerospace buyers in the Chicago area. It’s a chromium-molybdenum steel valued for strength, toughness, and wear resistance. It appears in shafts, gears, and structural components across defense platforms. We carry it as precision ground bar stock, ground to plus or minus 0.0005 inches or better.
Grade 4340 is another common request. It’s a nickel-chromium-molybdenum steel with high toughness and fatigue resistance. Components that cycle under load, like aerospace shafts and defense hardware, are where 4340 performs. We also carry stainless grades 316 and 316L for corrosion-critical applications, and duplex grades 2205 and 2507 Super Duplex when higher strength is needed alongside corrosion resistance.
Titanium Grades for Aerospace and Defense Projects
Grade 5 titanium, known as Ti-6Al-4V, is the most widely used titanium alloy we carry. It combines high strength, corrosion resistance, and good weldability. Aerospace, medical, and automotive applications all call for it regularly. When your spec includes titanium, Grade 5 is usually the starting point for Chicago area manufacturers and defense suppliers alike.
Grade 23, the Ti-6Al-4V ELI version, is the choice for medical implants and applications requiring enhanced biocompatibility. We carry both grades as round bars and rods. If your defense or aerospace project involves titanium, tell us the grade and application, and we’ll confirm availability and compliance status directly.
Precision Ground Tolerances Come With Compliance, Not Instead of It
Sourcing DFARS-eligible material gets you through the procurement gate. Tight tolerances get your material through the machining process. You need both, and one should never come at the expense of the other. We grind stainless bars to h6, h7, and h8 tolerance classes with surface finishes in the Ra 0.2 to 0.8 micrometer range.
Alloy steel bars hold plus or minus 0.0005 inches or better. For applications requiring even more finished performance, our Turned, Ground and Polished bars improve dimensional accuracy and surface quality beyond standard ground stock. We also offer Bearing Shaft Quality bars built for high wear resistance in linear motion applications, and Pump Shaft Quality bars designed for superior corrosion resistance in demanding environments. Every one of those products ships with the same DFARS eligible domestic sourcing your contract requires.
Value Added Services That Support Your Production Needs
Getting compliant, precision-ground bar stock is the foundation. We also offer straightening, chamfering bar ends, and cutting to custom lengths. Each service reduces the prep work your shop has to do before the material goes into production. That matters when your project timeline is tight and every step counts.
Our packaging is protective and designed to maintain surface quality during transit. If your application requires bar stock that arrives ready to load directly into a Swiss machine or CNC lathe without secondary prep, we handle the full prep on our end. Tell us what your production setup requires, and we’ll configure your order accordingly.
Ready to Source DFARS Compliant Bar Stock?
Getting your material right from the start saves time, reduces compliance risk, and keeps your project on schedule. We carry the grades your defense and aerospace specs call for, and most of our materials are domestically sourced. Submit a quote at precisiongroundmetals.com, call us at (708) 400-7217, or email sales@precisiongroundmetals.com.
We’re available Monday through Friday and on Sundays from 7 AM to 5 PM. Tell us the grade, the required tolerance, and whether DFARS documentation is needed. We’ll take it from there.
FAQs
Does DFARS apply to subcontractors and not just prime contractors?
Yes. The clause flows down through the supply chain. If your purchase order includes a DFARS requirement, it applies to your material regardless of your tier.
Which grades does Precision Ground Metals carry for defense projects?
We carry 4140, 4340, 316/316L stainless, duplex grades 2205 and 2507, and titanium Grade 5 and Grade 23, among others. Contact us to confirm availability.
What is the difference between DFARS, REACH, and RoHS?
DFARS covers domestic origin for defense metals. REACH governs chemicals for European markets. RoHS restricts hazardous substances in electronics. Each applies under different contract conditions.
Will DFARS-compliant material still meet my precision tolerance requirements?
Yes. Our DFARS-compliant bar stock is precision-ground to the same tight tolerances as our standard inventory. Compliance does not reduce dimensional accuracy.
