Brass Round Stock Applications in Precision Machining and Industrial Components
October 27, 2026Some parts just carry more load than others. A gear, a spindle, or a shaft in an aerospace or automotive assembly has to hold up under stress, and it still has to fit right. That’s where the bar you start with makes a difference.
We’re Precision Ground Metals, Inc. in Palos Hills, IL. We’ve spent more than 30 years in the steel industry and grinding, and we supply alloy steel precision ground bars for demanding manufacturing applications. Here’s how they support high strength components and what to think through before you place an order.
Why Alloy Steel Precision Ground Bars Fit High Strength Components
For manufacturers producing shafts, gears, spindles, and other precision components, both the material grade and the condition of the starting stock matter. Here’s what to weigh before you specify.
What sets these bars apart?
Two things, working together. Our alloy steel precision ground bars are made for high strength and hardness, and they’re ground to ±0.0005″ or better, with surface finish as a key feature of the product.
Strength alone isn’t enough. A high strength bar that arrives off size still needs extra work before it’s useful.
Which alloy grades are available?
We group our alloy steel grades three ways. The low alloy grades are 4140, 4340, 8620, and 4130. Our medium and high alloy grades are 6150 and 52100. For tool and die work, we also carry H13 and D2 in this lineup.
Having those groupings to choose from gives you options when specifying material for your component. If you’re unsure which grade fits, send us the print and the application, and we’ll talk it through.
What kinds of components are these bars used for?
These applications line up closely with high strength work. Alloy steel precision ground bars go into aerospace and automotive shafts and gears, spindles, bearings, and bushings. They’re also used in hydraulic and pneumatic systems and in tool and die making.
Why does a ±0.0005″ tolerance matter on a high strength part?
Picture a spindle or a gear shaft headed for a CNC machine. Starting with alloy steel precision ground to ±0.0005″ or better can reduce the amount of material that needs to be removed, depending on the finished dimensions. Our precision ground bars are also intended for Swiss machines and other high precision applications where consistent starting dimensions matter.
A specified ground tolerance can also help reduce dimensional variation in the starting material, giving machinists a more consistent basis for subsequent operations.
Round, flat, or square?
Not every high strength component starts as a round. Our alloy steel comes in round bars, flat bars, and square bars, and we offer custom cut lengths. These options allow you to choose a starting shape that better matches the dimensions and machining requirements of your component.
How can the bar arrive ready for your machine?
Bars can also arrive prepped. Straightening brings them within strict straightness tolerances, chamfering leaves the ends smooth and burr free for easier installation, and cutting delivers custom lengths matched to your specifications. We use protective packaging to keep material in condition during transit, then deliver to your location.
Depending on your production process, these preparation services can reduce the additional work needed before machining begins.
What about compliance and sourcing?
If your components are headed into defense or regulated programs, compliance needs to be settled before the order ships. We supply material with DFARS, REACH, and RoHS compliance, and most of our materials are domestically made. Let us know which requirements apply so we can confirm them for your material.
What should you include in a quote request?
The quote form covers the basics, like your name, company, contact details, and material of interest. The special request notes are where the useful detail goes: grade, shape, tolerance, lengths, quantity, and whether you need straightening, chamfering, or cutting. The more you tell us up front, the closer our first answer will be to what you need.
Let’s Match the Bar to Your Component
If you’re building shafts, gears, spindles, or tool and die parts and want an alloy steel bar that’s strong and close to size, send us the details. We’ll work through the grade, shape, and prep with you. Call (708) 400-7217, email sales@precisiongroundmetals.com, or fill out our Request A Quote form.
