303 vs. 304/304L Stainless Steel Round Bar: Which Grade Is Better for High-Volume Precision Turning?

6061 vs 7075 Aluminum for Precision Machined Components
October 23, 2026Ask a machinist what slows a job down and the answer often traces back to the stock. A bar that’s off size, rough, or the wrong grade means extra passes, extra setups, and extra scrap. That’s why choosing a precision ground bar supplier deserves the same care as choosing the machine the bar goes into.
We’re Precision Ground Metals, Inc., located at 8150 W 111th St in Palos Hills, IL, and we support manufacturing companies in Chicago with round bars, precision ground bars, and the prep work that gets material ready for production. Our team brings more than 30 years in the steel industry and grinding. When you compare precision ground bar suppliers, these are the material specifications, finishing options, and order details we recommend reviewing.
What Chicago Manufacturers Should Look for in a Precision Ground Bar Supplier
Choosing the right bar supplier involves more than comparing grades and prices. Material availability, dimensional tolerances, surface finish, and preparation services all affect how well an order fits your production requirements. At Precision Ground Metals, we help manufacturers evaluate these details when selecting material for their applications.
Does the supplier carry the materials your shop runs?
Few shops run a single alloy. One job calls for stainless, the next for a tool and die component, and the one after that for copper on an electrical part. We supply both ferrous and non ferrous materials: stainless steel, alloy steel, carbon steel, tool steel, aluminum, brass, bronze, copper, and titanium.
Grade depth matters as much as the list of metals. Our stainless lineup includes austenitic grades like 303, 304/304L, and 316/316L, ferritic 430 and 409, martensitic 410, 420, and 440C, plus duplex 2205 and 2507 Super Duplex. Our alloy steel selection includes 4140, 4340, 8620, 4130, 6150, 52100, H13, and D2. Available shapes include round, flat, and square bars, with custom cut lengths also offered. Reviewing the available grades helps your engineer match material properties to the requirements of each part.

What tolerances can you expect, and on which materials?
A tolerance claim only means something when it’s tied to a specific material. Our stainless precision ground bars are held to h6, h7, and h8 tolerances. Alloy steel and carbon steel precision ground bars are ground to ±0.0005″ or better. Precision ground tool steel is held to ±0.001″ or better, and precision ground aluminum comes in within ±0.001″.
Why should a buyer care? Stock that arrives close to size can leave less material to remove in the next operation. Our Precision Ground Bars are made to exact tolerances for Swiss machines and high precision applications, which is exactly where inconsistent stock shows up fast.
How is the bar finished?
Finish is the other half of the spec. Our stainless precision ground bars are centerless ground to a surface finish of Ra ≤ 0.2 to 0.8 µm. For these bars, the process moves from cold drawing through grinding and polishing, followed by inspection.
Beyond standard precision ground stock, we offer Ground & Polished Bars with a smooth, uniform finish and Turned, Ground & Polished (TGP) Bars for improved dimensional accuracy and surface quality. There are also Bearing Shaft Quality Bars built for wear resistance in linear motion applications and Pump Shaft Quality Bars made for corrosion resistance in demanding environments. And if you want precision grade material that’s ready to use, ask about our Accuracy Stock.
Can the material arrive ready for production?
Raw bar is only part of the job. We straighten bars to meet strict straightness tolerances, chamfer bar ends so they’re smooth and burr free for easier installation, and cut to custom lengths that match your specifications. Protective packaging keeps the material in condition during transit, and we deliver to your location. Depending on your production requirements, these services can reduce the preparation your shop needs to complete before machining.
Does the material meet your compliance requirements?
Compliance belongs on the spec sheet, not in a scramble after the PO. We supply material with DFARS, REACH, and RoHS compliance, and most of our materials are domestically made. Note your program’s requirements in the quote request so we can confirm them for your grade.
Which industries and applications do we support?
We support manufacturers in aerospace and defense, automotive manufacturing, medical device manufacturing, precision machining and CNC operations, tool and die making, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, marine, linear motion and robotics, construction and structural work, electronics and electrical manufacturing, and chemical processing. On the shop floor, that translates to parts like shafts and bearings, medical instruments, dies and punches, hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders, bushings, and electrical connectors.
What should you include when you request a quote?
The quicker we understand the job, the quicker we can match it. Start with your name, company, contact details, and material of interest. Use the special request notes to specify the grade, shape, diameter or other stock dimensions, tolerance, surface finish, length, quantity, and any straightening, chamfering, or cutting requirements.
